5 Fun Math Tricks to Impress Your Friends

Math doesn’t have to be boring! Here are 5 amazing mental math tricks that will make you look like a math wizard. 🧙‍♀️

Trick 1: Multiply by 11 (Two-Digit Numbers)

The Secret: Split the digits and put their sum in the middle!

Example: 35 × 11

  • Split: 3 __ 5
  • Add digits: 3 + 5 = 8
  • Answer: 385

Try it: 52 × 11 = ? (Answer: 572)

Trick 2: Square Numbers Ending in 5

The Secret: Multiply the first digit by (itself + 1), then add 25

Example: 25²

  • First digit: 2
  • 2 × (2+1) = 2 × 3 = 6
  • Add 25: 625

Example: 65²

  • 6 × 7 = 42
  • Add 25: 4225

Trick 3: The 9 Times Table Finger Method

The Secret: Use your fingers!

For 9 × 7:

  1. Put down your 7th finger
  2. Fingers to the left: 6
  3. Fingers to the right: 3
  4. Answer: 63

It works for all 9 times tables (1-10)!

Trick 4: Quick Percentage Calculation

The Secret: Move the decimal point

10% of any number: Move decimal one place left

  • 10% of 250 = 25
  • 10% of 47 = 4.7

5% of any number: Find 10%, then halve it

  • 5% of 200 = 20 ÷ 2 = 10

15% of any number: 10% + 5%

  • 15% of 80 = 8 + 4 = 12

Trick 5: Multiply by 5, 25, or 125

Multiply by 5:

Halve the number, then multiply by 10

  • 48 × 5 = (48 ÷ 2) × 10 = 24 × 10 = 240

Multiply by 25:

Divide by 4, then multiply by 100

  • 32 × 25 = (32 ÷ 4) × 100 = 8 × 100 = 800

Multiply by 125:

Divide by 8, then multiply by 1000

  • 64 × 125 = (64 ÷ 8) × 1000 = 8 × 1000 = 8000

Why These Tricks Work

These aren’t just magic - they’re based on mathematical patterns:

  • 11 trick: Uses place value (10 + 1)
  • Squares ending in 5: (n × 10 + 5)² = n(n+1) × 100 + 25
  • 9 times table: 9 = 10 - 1, creating the pattern

Understanding the why makes you a true math master! 🎓

Practice Makes Perfect

Try these with your friends and family:

  1. Ask them to pick a two-digit number
  2. Multiply it by 11 using the trick
  3. Watch their amazement! 😲
